Finished Curtain
My finished curtain was finally hung! It needs to be ironed, but other than that, it is exactly what I imagined.
I have been needing a covering for this window for many years. When I first moved in, there were only blinds that were partially broken. Those were thrown away a long time ago because Chad and I were worried about the kids' safety. I knew a lot of heat came through this big window in the summer and cold in the winter. I also hated that anyone could look right into my dining room.
I got more serious about trying to find a solution for this large window earlier this year and decided I wanted to make something. After learning that linens were the number one thing thrown away at thrift stores, I decided I wanted to make something using thrift store items. I took Noel with me to help with my vision. We found two curtains that could be shortened and sewn together and a tablecloth that I loved as an overlay. The result is something that I love. I can't wait to make creations like this for more rooms!

Curtain Project
I am working on curtains for my dining room. I bought two curtains that match but were different lengths from the thrift store a while ago and a lace table cloth to be put together to cover a large window. I got started on it today. So far, sewn the two panels together, measured the window to assure I make them the right length, and hemmed the bottom. Then, I stretched it out on the living room floor to plan how to place the table cloth on top. Unfortunately, I don't have the right color of thread to sew it on, but I will go to the fabric store on Monday to get it. The only other thing that I want to do is create a lining so the sun won't completely damage it. I got a sheet to try it, but it is the wrong shade of red. I will have to go back to the thrift store to find one a more suitable color. If it matches well enough and has enough material, I would also like to use it to make a curtain for the window on the front door. I hope that this will help cool down the house since it will create more shade inside.
Once this project is done, I will be looking for something to make curtains that match well enough to go in the living room.

Unpaper Towels
As I endeavor on a new lifestyle, I have been looking for more ways to be self-sufficient and kinder to the environment. My latest project is unpaper towels. I saw the idea in TikTok about a month ago and have mulled over the idea since. A few days ago, I found a good tutorial on Pinterest and ran with it using fabric I have had in the house since Noel was a baby, I believe. Basically, I cut 24 rectangles roughly the same size. Then, I put them wrong sides together, making 12 cloths, and sewed up the edges using a stitch I thought looked fun on my machine.Next, I sewed an X across the middle so they will continue to lay flat. Finally, I trimmed the edges and threads. The edges will fray a bit each time they are washed , but I’m ok with that.
These will be used in place of paper towels in most instances. We can use them to clean, wipe the sides of bowels or pans, wipe hands, etc. They won’t be used for things needing grease such as seasoning cast iron or draining bacon. I really think this will make a big difference in our paper towel consumption which will save us money and lower the amount of trash we create.

Finding Fabric
Noel is making her prom dress. Yesterday, we drove out to Joann Fabric to buy everything we needed. When choosing the fabric, I had her hold up the fabric and took pictures of each (I deleted all but her top 2 choices). I love that the people in this store didn’t bat an eye at the way we do such things. When I take pictures of clothing at other store so she can make a decision, we get all kinds of weird looks. At Joann’s, they just let us do our thing. By the way, she chose the red.
